PORTLAND STATE UNIVERSITY FACULTY ASSOCIATION

Local 3571     AFT   AFL-CIO

PSUFA is a union of adjunct faculty at Portland State University who teach less than .50 FTE.  We are affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers nationally.  We also maintain contact with other groups, nationally and internationally, that share our commitment to seeking academic freedom, fairness, and equity in pay for part-time and other non-tenured faculty.

The American Federation of Teachers has documented the decline of tenured faculty positions over the past three decades, and has played a leading role in seeking to counter the negative implications of that trend.  A key component of our effort is organizing part-time, and other non-tenured faculty, in the belief that improving the pay, benefits, and working conditions for all will end administrators’ reliance on “cheap labor” to patch up an ailing university system.  In the long run we contribute to a more stable learning environment and a fair economy.

Since its founding in 1978, the Portland State University Faculty Association has been fighting to protect the rights of adjunct faculty, and to gain access to critical benefits such as health care, job security, and education. Today, many advances PSUFA has won for part time faculty are threatened by administration budget proposals.
